For a small population the Northern Territory has significant levels of crime. The data for imprisonment shows that the NT has some serious issues!
The data from the ABS shows that over 80% of the people who are locked up in NT prisons are Aboriginals. Recidivism rates are increasing (known prior imprisonment), an indication that the current strategies to prevent re-offending are not working.
Business owners are faced with constant theft and damage. People feel unsafe in their own homes and on the street. Insurance premiums increase. Yet our politicians are not taking any real action to stop the vicious cycle that creates criminals.
