Director of Public Prosecutions Jack Karczewski

CRAIG DUNLOP, NT News October 7, 2019 reported on the comments of Director of Public Prosecutions Jack Karczewski.

The Territory’s top public prosecutor revealed the hopeless state of affairs within his agency to a pub full of gobsmacked guests at his office’s work Christmas party last year.

 

Karczewski’s comment can hardly inspire confidence for the public of the Northern Territory.

Dunlop noted in his article that

The agency has since struggled to staff who have quit, and has developed a reputation among many Territory lawyers for being shambolically managed.

According to Jason Walls, NT News March 10, 2020  it would seem that the DPP continues to be nothing but a laughing stock, a sick joke.

It was reported that Judge John Neill slammed the prosecution as the case of an escaped fugitive narrowly avoids collapse.

 

Prosecuting barrister Mary Chalmers told the court she only received the brief from the DPP last week and had assumed the necessary work had been done beforehand.

Ms Chalmers said she tried to organise for the officer to appear via video link to Borroloola where he now works but the equipment had broken down and applied to have him appear by telephone instead.

But Mr Neill rejected that application following submissions from Raymond’s lawyer, John Adams, that he would be unable to effectively cross examine the man without being able to observe his demeanour.

What a complete joke. But the joke is on the taxpayer as your tax dollar is swollowed up by the massive cost of apparently inept and incompetent DPP officers.
